According to the BLS (Bureau of Labor and Statistics), a government agency that collects and analyzes the essential statistical data of the American labor market, since the popularization of the Internet and mobile telephony in the 1990s, there has never been such a shortage of IT (Information Technology) professionals in the U.S. as it is today.

The BLS statement might sound contradictory as the U.S. technology market has posted record sales and hiring records throughout 2019, but it is exactly this success that has caused the current shortage of IT professionals. The number of new companies, startups, and businesses related to computing and technology that have emerged in the last 10 years, especially in Silicon Valley (California) has resulted in a curious situation, where there are more job openings available than there are qualified people to fill them.

As with many other professions, the United States needs to call upon the talents of foreign professionals to meet the demands of the information technology market. Not coincidentally, about 35% of IT professionals currently working in large U.S. companies come from China, India, and Japan. And the trend is that this search for “intellectual capital” from other countries will intensify even more in the coming years.

In the last 15 years, there has been a great increase in the number of IT professionals in Brazil, many of them with a bachelor’s degree and even with graduate degrees and MBAs in the IT field. In that same period, the number of large American multinationals in Brazil has increased considerably, many of them have sent their Brazilian employees to take IT courses or, in many cases, have transferred their IT professionals from Brazil to the United States, granting them the L-1 visa, which allows temporary work in America.

This experience that Brazilian information technology professionals have gained in recent years makes them perfect candidates to apply for a job and to become Legal Permanent Residents (Green Card holders) in the United States, thus contributing to overcoming the current shortage of employees in this area. However, many IT professionals do not know that there are specific American visas to make this dream a reality.

Furthermore, none of the restrictions applied in recent years by the current U.S. administration against immigration programs or laws have affected “EB” visas. In fact, the U.S. government continues to encourage qualified immigrants to come through these visas.
